Skin Cancer Treatment
Overview
The most common type of cancer to affect humans is Skin Cancer.
The symptoms include:
- Discolouration of the skin
- Appearance of a new growth
- Development of a non-healing sore
At a cellular level, the damaged cells begin to grow and divide uncontrollably within the skin. As the damaged cells multiply, they form a growth (tumour). Since this type of cancer generally develops in the outermost layers of skin, a tumor is usually clearly visible.
There are various types of skin cancer—
- Melanoma ('malignant melanoma') – This type of skin cancer develops from melanocytes. This is the more serious type of skin cancer as it tends to spread to other organs very quickly
- Non-Melanoma – These are about 20 times more common than melanomas. The two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

- Smoking tobacco
- HPV infections
- Some genetic syndromes including congenital melanocytic nevi syndrome which is characterized by the presence of nevi (birthmarks or moles)
- Chronic non-healing wounds.
- Ionizing radiation, environmental carcinogens, artificial UV radiation (e.g. tanning beds), aging, and light skin color.
- The use of many immunosuppressive medication increase the risk of skin cancer.
Methods for Diagnosis of Skin Cancer Include:
- Physical Examination of the skin
- Biopsy
- Blood test
Treatment for Skin Cancer
The management option adopted for Skin Cancer depends on various factors put together. These include:
- Type of cancer
- Location of the tumor
- Age of the patient
- If the cancerous growth is primary or a recurrence
The type of surgical options include:
Mohs' micrographic surgery (Mohs surgery)
Via this technique the cancerous growth is completely removed while also making sure that the least amount of surrounding tissue is removed. This is a highly skill intensive procedure and important for areas such as the face so as to achieve cosmetically favorable results.
Reconstruction
Involves surgical excision. This is actually the most common form of treatment for cancer affecting the skin. The aim here remains to remove as less surrounding tissue as possible and avoid any long term scarring.
The choice of this technique hence depends on:
- Size of the Tumour
- Location of the defect
In many cases where the defects are larger and skin approximation is difficult, the surgeons opt for skin grafts and local skin flaps.
Skin Grafting
Skin grafting involves patching of a defect with skin that is removed from another site in the body. The skin graft is sutured to the edges of the defect, and a bolster dressing is placed atop the graft for seven to ten days, to immobilize the graft as it heals in place.
Local Skin Flaps
Local skin flaps are a method of closing defects with tissue that closely matches the defect in color and quality. Skin from the periphery of the defect site is mobilized and repositioned to fill the deficit.
In the case of disease that has spread (metastasized), further surgical procedures or chemotherapy may be required.
Prognosis
The mortality rate of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are around 0.3% which means only 3 people die out of 1000 occurrence of skin cancer.
Cost
Exact Cost of the Skin Cancer Treatment varies person to person and will depend on health condition of the Individual and also choice of the healthcare facility and Hospital Room, however average minimum price of the Medical Procedure is around USD 3000- USD 4000 this cost Include the cost of the Surgeon’s fees, Anesthetist fees and the hospital stay of 3-4 days in twin sharing room.
